Presidents Report May 2014

Hi, Sport Aircraft Club members,

New event – all-weather fly or drive Sport Aircraft Club event for Sunday 20th July visiting the Soaring Museum at Monarto details on the calendar. I encourage all members to plan to attend – drive or fly.

The Lockleys bowling club  announced by letter just before the last club meeting  that due to the changing circumstances of their volunteers they were no longer able to prepare meals for our Wednesday meeting.

However, the meals could still be had but through their contract caterers at an increased price of $20 per person. Your council has looked at all the options including changing venues to minimise the cost and get the best meals for members and have concluded the best option is to accept the Bowling clubs offer. So while the meal is at $5 increased cost it will be a higher quality restaurant meal with desert and it will be provided by Zoots restaurant of Henley Square.

The meal for the May meeting is “scotch  fillet steak with sweet potato mash with red wine jus” followed by  “bread and butter pudding “. We have a minimum number of people requirement so please book your meal in the next day or so by contacting me by telephone (0411196232) or email (Email Chris Moore) by next Monday at the latest. Steve Biele who normally takes the bookings is away in Canada. I encourage anyone who can make it for the meal to do so as it is the 1st meeting using the new caterers and already there are a few apologies from sun seeking regulars who are away on holiday etc. If you require a special dietary meal just let me know at the time of booking.

The Sonex building project is advancing well. Thanks to everyone’s input we are slightly ahead of schedule with the second wing nearing completion. We could still support a couple more young builders if you have any sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters interested in aviation. This could be a great way to kick off their careers and get time towards their initial training with very little outlay.

The speaker for the next meeting will be David Harris and the subject “Human Factors in Aviation Safety”. David’s distinguished career in aviation began in Tiger Moths, then flying jets, working as a test pilot in England and lately as a senior research fellow with the Systems Engineering and Evaluation Centre at Mawson Lakes. This promises to be a great talk relevant to all pilots and those interested in aviation safety.

Great to see so so many club members at the last workshop visit the Lancair 4P and Komet jet impressed us all and Thanks again to Henry Shultz and Dave Limmer for organising .

I think it is a pity to lose the romantic side of flying and simply to accept it as a common means of transport…. Amy Johnson
