Presidents Report July 2022

As winter descends upon us the opportunity to commit aviation becomes less frequent as we have to wait it out during the passages of cold fronts with their attendant wind and rain.

Coupled with having both my Chipmunk and RV7A out of the air with maintenance issues recently, my personal flying has been severely curtailed.

Therefore I was very thankful when committee member Andrew Hogarth invited me to fly his new 4 seat Vans RV10. Compared to the other 2 seater RV models I have flown it is a significantly larger and heavier aircraft. Flying it has a very smooth and “solid” feel about it, which is exactly what you want for long distance touring. Roll rate is more docile and the aircraft is non aerobatic but so is any specialist touring aircraft. You also sit higher in the aircraft with a better view forwards and downwards. Thank you Andrew for the experience. I just need to fly the RV3 and RV14 to complete the full set of Vans aircraft. I may need to give Ian Pearce a call!

We have reached to maximum number on the Greenock Aviation Museum tour and lunch on July 30th. If you are really keen then contact Andrew Hogarth in case there is a cancellation. If you have put your name down and can’t go for some reason, then likewise, let Andrew know so your spot can be reallocated.

Saturday 20th August is the date for the next club BBQ at Murray Bridge Airport Windsock Lounge. The usual format with a clipboard being circulated at the next club meeting to assist with catering.

On August 31st we are planning a mini fly away for 2 nights to Wentworth NSW. There are a few spots left on the mini bus we are hiring for a tour of the area. You will need to book your own accommodation. If interested contact myself or Greg Tabe if you want to join in. We will provide you with further details.

Chris Dearden is updating the club website with a section for member’s aircraft, visible only to those who sign in. The intention is to have some photos of your aircraft along with a paragraph of information for members to view. If you would like members to know more about your aircraft then please contact Chris.

This month’s guest speaker on July 13th is member Rod Lovell. He spoke to us awhile back about his book, “From Hero to Zero”. His talk will expand upon his experience in ditching and how it might be applied to the aircraft types we fly. He will also talk about the whole approach and mind-set in dealing with aircraft emergency situations.

I shall be visiting interstate so I will have to give my apologies for July 13th. The meeting will be hosted by Rob Wintulich so please be nice to him!

See you in August.

Blue skies,

Steve

I am not afraid of flying, I am afraid of not flying.
