Presidents Report January 2014

Since my last report a number of events have occurred the most moving being the funeral and send off of long serving and inspiring member Graham Treloar who died suddenly while recovering from heart surgery.

David Harris spoke at the December meeting about the Hanweide airshow in Europe which he had just returned from. A talk which included his flight into the airshow and interesting and historical aircraft not seen in Australia. Also at the December meeting Steve Nelson presented a video on the Sonex so members could see the features and flight of the aircraft being built by our club for the benefit of club members.

Thanks to effort by Steve Nelson the club Sonex aircraft kit has been cleared of customs and is now installed in Dr Dans shed. Other council members have been busy counting parts, re-wiring and clearing the shed ready for building. Henry Shultz has offered some wing benches which will be delivered  to the build site soon. Hopefully by the February meeting we will be ready to start the building process. Chris Dearden has had some success seeking sponsorship for the club aircraft details at the February meeting.

The club website is now showing  photos from Johnson airfield December 19th fly in on Kangaroo Island. About 40 aircraft attended with a good representation from the Sport Aircraft Club of SA. An enjoyable event held in association with the American River Gala Day with a ferry bus to and from the airfield. All thanks to Dean Johnson and we look forward to next years event.

Most important to keep our club running pay your annual dues. Non financial members are not permitted to vote at the AGM which is coming up in March. Club subscriptions are all due at the beginning of each calendar year and are set this year at $60. If you have the facility the easiest way to pay is by direct transfer to the Sport Aircraft Club of SA Inc. BSB 085-005 Account 20-509-7256. Please add your name in the details so the membership officer knows who the funds are from. Details of other methods of payment are on the website and there will be credit card facilities at the February meeting.

A great talk is organised for the February 12th meeting on the “History of Aviation in South Australia” by local aviation historian Nigel Daw. This is a night not to be missed bring a friend.

Looking forward to an eventful year for the club and members – so get involved and reap the rewards.

Once you have learned to fly your plane, it is far less fatiguing to fly than it
is to drive a car.  You don’t have to watch every second for cats, dogs,
children, lights, road signs, ladies with baby carriages and citizens who drive
out in the middle of the block against the lights…. Nobody who has not been up
in the sky on a glorious morning can possibly imagine the way a pilot feels in
free heaven.  ~William T. Piper
