I hope everyone had a great Christmas season and an enjoyable holiday break.
The summer so far has been much cooler and wetter than normal but I have managed to get some flying in, including a trip to Benalla and Echuca.
The weather around Goolwa where my aircraft are based was very weird, particularly the week following Christmas.
There was 30 knot winds, rain, low cloud and fog, many times present all at once! Anyway, by new year things cleared up and I was able to get some flying in.
The last club event for 2023 was the BBQ flyin at Murray Bridge. There was a great turnout with 40 people present and six aircraft flew in, including David Pocock’s newly painted RV14 and John Ashcroft’s new RV7.
As is always the case, many aviation events are coming up in the next few months, timed for the more favourable weather we get in late summer and early autumn. I will try to summarise but my list is not exhaustive and I am sure there are others.
- 1-3 March- Wings over Illawarra Airshow, Shellharbour Airport NSW
- 8-10 March- RVAA Annual Flyin and AGM, Serpentine Airport WA
- 10 March- Tyabb Airshow VIC
- 22-23 March- SAAA Ausfly, Wentworth NSW
- 7 April- Aldinga Airshow SA
- 12-14 April Parkes NSW, Fly’n for Fun RAAAUS
It would be good to get to all of these but if you can only choose one I would say support your local one at Aldinga. Organisers want to see local aircraft flown in and put on static display for the public to see. Contact the organisers for more information.
In addition we have two upcoming club events. Firstly, a Bunnings BBQ funds raiser at Windsor Gardens on 16 March. This is very profitable for the club. The 2 events per year we get rostered for raises more than enough money to pay for 2 club scholarships. We need 10 people for each event, 2 groups of 5 covering two 4 hour shifts. We seem to get the same volunteers every time and they need a break. If you have not yet volunteered I encourage you to do so as it is fun and you are doing something for your club. Contact Greg Tabe for more details.
In late April the intrepid travellers in our club will set off on the 2024 Club Safari leaving Adelaide on April 22nd for 14 nights. This year the destination is Western Australia. A long way to go but some brilliant scenery to be seen. Contact Greg Tabe for more details.
Our first meeting for 2024 will be on Wednesday, February 14th (yes, Valentines Day), at the West Adelaide Football Club.
Our guest speaker will be Barrie Rogers giving us an update on his new electric aircraft development being done right here in Adelaide. This was the talk scheduled for last October but had to be rescheduled. Come along and hear how electric aircraft have developed in the last few years.
Blue skies,
Steve
