Plane Paper July 2021

Hi

The cooler, wetter weather is well upon us now which may put a damper on some of our flying activities, but there is still the opportunity to meet up with other aviators to chat, look at aircraft and do some fund raising.

This is exactly what club members have been doing in June. Member Nick Mebberson hosted the official launch of his new 3 cylinder radial engine at his factory in Lonsdale. There was a big turnout of guests including State and Local Government officials, members of related industries, potential customers and family members. The Sport Aircraft Club was represented by Chris Dearden and myself.

Engine production is now ramping up with engines now fitted to 3 motor vehicles, a VW Beetle, a VW Kombi and a classic racing Porsche 356. There is also an engine fitted with a propeller and gearbox which is hoped to be fitted to an aircraft and flying before years end.
There is also potential to fit these engines to boats and function as a power supply unit. We wish this local SA Company every success in the future.

On June 26th eight Club members participated in our inaugural Windsor Gardens Bunnings BBQ fund raiser. It is a much bigger facility than the Kent Town store we were previously at, and as such we sold significantly more stock. The net profit to the club after costs was $761. We went live with a square reader for an electronic payment option to customers which was just as well as about 40% of them made use of it. A little bit of tweaking with the stock order is needed as customers in this area drink a lot more Coca Cola and prefer both tomato and mustard sauce on their sausage! Well done everyone and a special thanks to Greg Tabe for organising this.

The following day about 20 hardy souls ventured up to a very foggy and soggy Adelaide Hills to see John Ashcroft’s very nice Vans RV7 project. It is getting close to completion now, being structurally complete. Remaining jobs include painting, some wiring and cockpit fit out. 90% done and 90% to go, as they say. John is hoping to move the project to Aldinga airfield for final assembly and test flying sometime in September. He then plans to operate the aircraft from his rather challenging farm strip at his home. John’s hospitality extended to a sausage sizzle BBQ and wine, which was much appreciated.

The re-emergence of COVID lock downs throughout much of the country has resulted in numerous restrictions and cancellations. The first casualty I have seen in Sport Aviation is the cancellation of Ausfly at Narromine in September. If you hear of others please let me know and I will get them posted on the club web site.

The July club meeting will go ahead as planned but be aware that the dining room is limited to a maximum of 50 people, which so far has not been exceeded. Please continue to register your attendance on the club web site which will be closed if the maximum is reached.

Our July speaker is Ian Linke. He is an electrical engineer with an interest in aviation. Over the years he has been moulding aircraft canopies, mainly for gliders but also for home built aircraft.
He will be speaking about the correct fitment, maintenance and repair of this important part of our aircraft.

Stay warm and blue skies,

Steve
